People move to Colorado for the life it offers and stay for the same reason. Remaining in your own home as you age is a realistic goal here, provided the house is adapted in time. Colorado homes have some particular features worth planning around.
The three-level house
Basement, main floor, upper floor. Most Front Range homes have all three, with bedrooms at the top and laundry at the bottom.
- Move the laundry to the main floor if you can
- Fit a stair lift to the stairs you use most
- Consider a home elevator if you want all three levels long term
The front steps and the weather
- Handrails on both sides
- Lighting on a sensor
- A heated mat or a reliable snow-clearing arrangement
- A platform lift or outdoor stair lift where steps are a real barrier
Dry air, bright sun, thin air
- Altitude makes exertion harder, so reducing stair climbing has an added benefit
- Strong sunlight causes glare. Use shades and matte flooring to avoid dazzle on steps.
The bathroom
- A low-threshold shower with a seat
- Grab bars
- A comfort-height toilet
The kitchen and everyday items
- Pull-out shelves
- Lever taps and handles
- Frequently used things stored between waist and shoulder height
The deck and yard
Outdoor space is a big part of life here. Check thresholds at patio doors and add a rail at deck steps.
Plan before you need it
The best time to make changes is while you are well and can choose calmly. Tackle fall risks first, then the stairs.
