People often put off getting a stair lift because they picture a messy building job. In reality it is one of the quickest home improvements there is. This is the whole process.
The survey
A representative visits your home and:
- Measures the staircase length, width and angle
- Checks headroom and the space at each end
- Looks for doors, radiators or vents near the stairs
- Asks about the rider’s height, weight and mobility
- Recommends a model and the side of the stairs for the rail
You receive a written quote.
Ordering
For a straight staircase, the lift is usually available quickly. A curved rail has to be manufactured and takes longer.
Before installation day
- Clear the stairs and landings
- Make sure there is an outlet near the top or bottom
- Plan for the rider to be present
Installation
- Support brackets are screwed to the stair treads
- The rail is mounted on the brackets
- The carriage and seat are fitted to the rail
- The charger is connected
- The lift is run and adjusted
A straight lift normally takes a few hours. Nothing is fixed to the wall, and carpet stays in place.
Testing
The installer checks the safety sensors, the seat belt, the swivel lock, the remote controls and the charging.
The first ride
You are shown how to sit, belt up, travel, swivel and get off, how to fold the lift, and what to do if it stops. Ride it several times while the installer is there.
Afterward
- Keep the lift on its charge point
- Keep the stairs clear
- Arrange an annual service
